Growing up in the Carmel Valley, winemaker Bret Hogan developed an immense love for the landscapes of California at an early age. His early training in wine was as "Cali" as it gets: after a Masters in Enology from UC Davis, his first cellar gig was at the renowned Stag's Leap Cellars in the Napa Valley. Bret then hopped from one icon to another, landing at the legendary Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault, where he shaped his perspective and approach towards winemaking: a focus on fruit sourced from unique parcel sites, carefully tended with organic and biodynamic practices, vinified with native yeasts, slow fermentations, and long élévages that allow the wines to express the complexity and nuance of each terroir.

On Friday, we'll have the Burgundy-meets-Cali lineup from Bret's Côte West Wines, who have been quietly making some of our favorite wines in the state in Oakland's Jingletown since 2015. Bret (and our good friend and VB alum, Maria Castelli!) behind the bar pouring the full scope of Côte West's site-expressive wines: from balanced, classic Sauvignon Blanc to the little known (and greatly undervalued) lithe, lively Counoise to the dark, lush fruit of single vineyard Zinfandel.
