Armenia is home to one of the oldest winemaking traditions on earth, with archaeological evidence of wine production dating back more than 6,000 years. And while the country has been making wine for millennia, its modern wine scene is lost amongst the vast amounts of imports coming here from Europe.

This Thursday, we’re welcoming Adam Kablanian, founder of Alexandrea Winery, for a tasting of five wines from one of Armenia’s exciting new producers.

An Armenian-American entrepreneur with a lifelong passion for wine, Adam spent more than two decades dreaming of starting his own winery. He first experimented with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in California’s Los Altos Hills before turning his attention to his homeland. In 2017, he founded Alexandrea Winery with a mission to showcase Armenia’s remarkable high-altitude vineyards, volcanic soils, and untapped winemaking potential.

What’s particularly interesting about Alexandrea is its approach to blending old and new. Alongside Areni, Armenia’s signature indigenous red grape, Adam is growing familiar international varieties like Pinot Noir, exploring how they express themselves in a completely different landscape.

We’ll be pouring five wines, including Alexandrea’s 2023 Areni, 2024 Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir Rosé, and 2 different vintages of the White Cuvée.

Adam will be here in person to pour the wines, share his story, and introduce us to a wine country that’s been making wine for thousands of years but is only beginning to get the international attention it deserves.
