A former pianist, pensive and reflective and decidedly non-volcanic in temperament, Girolamo Russo is one of the greatest undersung producers working the volcanic soils of Mt. Etna. This field blend of old and young vines of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Capppuccio grapes takes the sandy, volcanic soils of Etna and transforms them into something beguiling. Not far in some respects from a lithe, feminine, juicy Pinot Noir, this is nevertheless a deeper and more complex beast: ripe berry fruit, toast and all sorts of spice notes make this a likely contender for your fave of the year.
