“The Queen of Biodynamics!” “The Lady of Teroldego!” “The woman behind one of the most historical and respected natural wineries in Italy!” Oh, we could go on but long story short, Elisabetta Foradori is a vinous legend.
On Friday at Vine, Alyssa Papiernik of Farm Wine Imports will be uncorking some of our all time favorite wines, period. Foradri, helmed by Elisabetta and her husband Rainer for decades, and now in the capable hands of their children, holds a crucial place in the history and continued significance of natural winemaking. Vieni a vedere!
Elisabetta was destined to make wine. In 1939, her grandfather purchased a winery surrounded by picturesque Alpine vineyards in Trentino, under the shadow of the Dolomite mountains. Her father Roberto managed Foradori until his untimely death when Elisabetta was 18, her mom Gabriella stepped in briefly to allow Elisabetta to wrap up her winemaking degree. In 1984, Elisabetta took the helm and immediately began turning heads, putting Trentino Alto Adige on the map as a serious winemaking region and earning her crown as “The Lady of Teroldego”. Over her career, Elisabetta transcended the role of simple winemaker: she became a pioneering biodynamic farmer, a champion of indigenous grape varieties, an advocate of holistic winemaking, an adopter of amphorae aging and an all around force of nature.
Elisabetta & Rainer & Roberto rescued indigenous varieties of Trentino, including Teroldego, from extinction. They then strove to make wines that were true representations of these varieties. Today, the kids Emilio, Theo and Myrtha Zierock continue in these footsteps, running the winery with ingenuity and grace. Come through to taste these truly graceful, natural, critical wines (some of which are very rare and hard to come by!).
