We taste new (to us) winemakers on the regular; when their wines delight us, we bring them in. (It's what keeps the shops dynamic: like Heraclitus's river, you should never enter the same Vintage Berkeley twice.)
Still, though, it's rare we encounter a brand new (to us) winemaker that so convinces us that we make grand sweeping gestures with our hands and say, "we'll take all of it."
Next Thursday at Elmwood? We want to introduce you to the biggest mind-blow of 2023 (thus far): the central Sicilian wines of Contrada Passofonduto, helmed by Giuseppe Cipolla.
He's located about 15 miles from Agricento, and the south coast of central Italy, and we ain't in Etna here, Toto! This is a landscape of steep, mineral-rich outcroppings (it was a land famous for its salt mines), and the uniqueness of the terroir shines through in these wild, special wines.
