"Baby Super Tuscan" isn't the most robust category at the shop. But believe us - Cantaloro is top of class! The Avignonesi family had long been producing wine in Montepulciano, but when Virginie Saverys took over in 2009, committing the estate to biodynamic and organic farming, the wines entered a whole new category of quality and expressiveness. 'Cantaloro' is a blend of younger vines - 50% Sangiovese, and about equal parts Merlot and Cab - fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless before aging in neutral barrel for 18 months. Unlike the burly Super Tuscans that dominate the market, this is versatile and high toned, with a palate marked by blueberry and sweet spice, with crushed herbs and a dry finish.
