TL; DR: Two Shepherds' William Allen is one of the fastest rising stars in Californian winemaking, beloved by classicists and naturalistas alike. His 2017 Grenache is one of the most vibrant and delicious CA Rhone reds we've had all year long, and is perfectly suited for the season; at 47% off the usual winery price? You should be casing up!
Two Shepherds is officially all the rage.
Winemaker William Allen was called California's "Rhone-style rockstar" by SF's own Esther Mobley. He was celebrated by the NY Times' Eric Asimov repeatedly and with fervor ("I've pretty much loved every one..."). He was proclaimed a "darling of natural wine fans" by the Washington Post. And recently his thoughts on orange wine making were quoted by Forbes.
Us? We’re that annoying lady who has to tell you how she knew that band before you did, before it even released their first album, and heck, before they even bought their guitars!
Okay, we’re kidding - but years back, when we first encountered the wines? We were pretty much instant fans of William’s garagiste winemaking. Unlike many of his blowsier Russian River peers, these are organically made, dry-farmed, minimally intervened upon, low-alcohol, and above all beautiful lil' gems!
His latest Grenache is a bottled riposte to all who think that California can't compete with Old World wines for balance and soul: bright with lively acidity, it's a classic Rhone red that could be mistaken for one of southern France's best: think vibrant red cran-cherry fruit, with hints of pepper, forest floor, and subtle spice notes.
This a wine that's worth every penny at $32, rivaling as it does its naturally made French peers; but at 47% off on the case? This is an absurd chance to get your Thanksgiving wine and your Christmas gifts wrapped up in one fell swoop!
