TL; DR: Nebbiolo with age on it is one of the greatest experiences in wine... but it often costs a pretty penny! Not tonight, though! Blow off Barolo... and get yourself some Ghemme! Get one of the greats of Piedmontese Nebbiolo... from one of the two greatest vintages in 30 years... for 30% off its usual (and already great) price! Organically farmed, drinking gorgeously now, and cellarable for another decade, easy!

Nebbiolo: it's been worshipped as one of the world's greatest grapes, worthy of reflection and genuflection both, for centuries upon centuries.

In the last 50 years, a historically anomalous thing occurred, at least by the millennia-deep timescale of Nebbiolo: somehow, somewhere, someone got the idea that Nebbiolo's special place was in the lowlands, in two towns called Barolo and Barbaresco.

Now, let's be clear — we have nothing against those B-words! Barolo’s called “the wine of kings, and the king of wines” for a reason. But they’re not the only spots in Piedmont when it comes to our lovergrape named Nebbiolo. In fact? 150km to the northeast sits a village that was regarded as every bit Barolo’s equal, if not its superior, for centuries: Ghemme. A tiny town hidden at the very base of the Italian Alps, located in the now-little-known winegrowing area of Alto Piemonte (the name literally translates to ‘high Piedmont’), it's a veritable Alpine paradise, set amidst the forest-clad hills along the banks of the Sesia River.

One of our favorite producers in the region is Ca' Nova... and when we saw the chance to score a pristine parcel of their 2010? I.e., a) one of the two greatest vintages in Piedmont in the past 30 years, and b) a wine now entering its prime drinking window, so you don't have to patiently sit on it for 5-10 years before cracking it? — we didn't hesitate!

Precise and mineral-driven, this is gorgeously earthy & red-berried on the nose, with dark cherries, herbs, orange peel, tar, leather, anise, tobacco leaf and more on the palate. This is just a freakish value for aged, top-shelf Nebbiolo from a great vintage! Medium-bodied, and still fresh and lively on the palate. (It also clocks in at 13.5% ABV, a bit lighter than some of its Nebbiolo peers, which is a great thing!)

And — apparently we're not alone! The Wine Enthusiast recently raved it up in a 92-point review:

"This structured red has aromas of woodland berry, baking spice, forest floor and crushed stone. The medium-bodied, focused palate delivers juicy red cherry, strawberry, white pepper and star anise alongside fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2020–2030. 92 Points."

This is one of the freaky-deakiest deals you'll see this year on a perfectly aged, ready-to-drink-now Nebbiolo... from one of the region's top vintages in the last 30 years!
