They might be separated by an international border, but Friuli, in Italy’s northeastern corner, and neighboring Slovenia share a strikingly similar winemaking tradition.

As with most regions within Central Europe, Slovenia’s borders have been remarkably fluid. From the Romans to the Hapsburgs, and all the way until the London Agreement in 1954 (when the historic city of Trieste was officially restored to Italy), Slovenia and Friuli have flowed and merged into one another, cementing a shared culture that persists even today.

That shared culture is reflected in the wines they each produce. Their respective terrains mirror the other - rocky slopes and hillsides give way to verdant lowlands, providing a broad range of terroir and varietal cultivation. In both regions, international varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon have found natural homes. But it’s native varieties like Teran, Refosco (Refosk, in Slovenia), and Vitovska, that have long been the focal point of wine production across the regions.

We’ll have our friend (and honorary SC team member) Nick Dazzi opening 8 wines from across Friuli and Slovenia, showcasing everything from elegant bubbles to crisp, bright, mineral whites, skin-macerated, chewy, savory marvels to dark, brooding, complex reds. Try a mix-and-match flight of 4, or dive all the way in for the full lineup.
