Transylvania: it's been called the place that's "as far as you can get away from Europe while still being in Europe." Horse carts still outnumber cars in many villages, small and self-sufficient agriculture is the norm, and there are more fortified churches than anywhere else in Europe. (Perhaps unsurprising, given that this is where a frisky and fun-loving guy named Vlad the Impaler once vertically impaled nearly 20,000 people — and then put them on display — to intimidate Ottoman invaders.)

But it also has an unbroken winegrowing tradition going back over 2000 years. The supposed birthplace of Dionysus/Bacchus, it remains an out-of-time landscape, with traces of both the Middle Ages and Communism still frozen in place. So it's perhaps unsurprising that one of the most exciting winemakers we've encountered in the past few years — Edgar Brutler — hails from this land... and it's even less surprising still to learn that it's imported by perhaps America's premier wine importer of wines from "the other Europe:" Danch & Granger.

This Thursday, we're celebrating Halloween by alternately expanding and blowing your minds by introducing you to the Transylvanian wines of Edgar Brutler! We'll have 6 of our favorites open, from his one-of-a-kind, uniquely gluggable pet-nat to the full range of Romania's favorite grape, Grunspitz (late ripening, small berried, thick skinned, singing with acidity, and capable of taking on many equally delicious forms), with a sprinkling of other stunners in between.
