Galicia feels almost like a different country from the Spain most people picture: green, rainy, Atlantic, and home to some of the coolest wine country on the Iberian Peninsula. That climate gives its wines a freshness that runs through everything from the salty, citrusy Albariños of Rías Baixas to Godello and some seriously exciting reds. Which brings us to Mencía. Yes, Mencía is that grape with the funny pronunciation. A real Spaniard will say “men-THEE-yuhhh,” but however you say it, you should probably be drinking more of it. Is Mencía the new Pinot Noir? Maybe. It has a lot of what Pinot drinkers love: bright red fruit, perfume, freshness, and the ability to be light on its feet without feeling simple. We’ll start with two of Galicia’s signature whites (Albariño & Godello) before putting that theory to the test with a trio of Mencías that will hopefully get you hooked on this Galician delight!
