As some of the most revered real estate in the winemaking world, Burgundy certainly needs no introduction. Indeed, the striking balance and tension the vineyards in this stretch of east-central France imbue into the storied wines they produce are the root cause of many a vinous fixation, lifelong obsession, and are a particular hiccup in any endeavor to stick diligently to a responsible wine budget. But Burgundy is more than just a source of some of the world's best wine; it's a sensibility that young winemakers from across the globe seek to understand, and often make the pilgrimage to these great Domaines to witness, absorb, and carry with them when they journey back home. Now, as that sensibility proliferates across the globe, some of the most scintillating examples of that balance and tension can be found well outside of Burgundy, often from regions you would least expect.
.
On Friday, we're launching our new tasting series Anywhere But Burgundy, showcasing winemakers in unexpected regions making nuanced Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and more with an undeniably Burgundian approach. Our first stop? Australia, where three producers have emerged as our favorite torch-bearers for an exciting new wave of winemakers: Luke Lambert, Joshua Cooper, and Ochota Barrels. We'll taste through 6 wines, each uniquely composed and expressive of an individual point of view while still demonstrating the influence that Burgundian winemaking has had on them - even beyond just Pinot Noir and Chardonnay!
.
Our friend Geoff Millar from Martines Wines will be behind the bar to share more about why Australia is at the forefront of some of the most captivating winemaking on the planet (and maybe pour a surprising splash of one of the most unique and limited Australian wines in the shop!).
