People often look to Gigondas to beat Chateauneuf-du-Pape on value -- but on rare occasions we think it can beat C-d-P in the all-around gymnastic competition, too. Especially when you factor in the warming climate, it's not a given anymore that C-d-P should be the default winner it once was. The higher elevation vineyards and limestone soils of Gigondas produce elegant wines that still pack a bold punch. Domaine du Grand Montmirail's Les Deux Juliette is a classic blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvèdre from fifty to sixty-year-old vines, all hand-harvested. The result is a wine that straddles the line of Old World finesse and New World pleasure. Bold dark fruits on the palate meld with savory notes of olives and wild brushy herbs and a succulent, mouthwatering finish leaves lures you back for another sip... and another... and another!
