This is the sort of wine the Big Pinot Lobby is afraid you'll find out about. Alpine-grown Schiava is proof that reds needn’t be big, inky and rich to be loaded with flavor. Its light hue is deceptive, though: the wine is positively bursting with juicy raspberry, cherry, and blackberry fruit in every sip. Moderate alcohol and a cool mountain-influenced acidity will further endear you to it. The cold northern climate of Italy’s Alto Adige produces reds like this that are rustic, full of nervy minerality, and unique in their cool expressions of bright red fruit.
