Years ago, when I was working in the shared cellar where Jaimee Motley produces her wine, I found myself battling off a particularly unfortunate hangover, with no relief in sight. Then, like a mirage in the desert, a hand extended, holding a crisp, cold beer, the medicine I needed to heal my self-inflicted wounds. Since that moment, I've thought of her as a bit of a refreshment fairy, and tasting her 2020 Mondeuse Rosé, from the organically farmed Rorick Vineyard in Calaveras county, I believe that moniker is well-earned. Texturally compelling, this is stony and mineral rich - it is a Savoie variety, after all - and creamy and unctuous in equal measure, with prickly pear, blood orange, and watermelon combining for a powerfully focused palate, and green mountain herbs lift the long, elegant finish. Remember, friends, hydration is key!
