(You may no longer be able to afford Clos Rougeard without selling a kidney or two, but other gems remain to be mined from that same glorious Loire earth! The one that most recently popped our skull-tops open? Nicolas Grosbois’s single-vineyard ‘Gabare,’ a tiny plot of 40+ year-old vines farmed organically and planted on sandy clay soils over limestone. Fermented in concrete & aged in wood, this is serious, glorious stuff: ripe dark red fruit, hints of peppercorn, soft silky tannins, this is Cab Franc hitting both its high & basso profundo notes both.
