Like father like son: Matt Meyer, son of Silver Oak founders Bonny and Justin Meyer, may love his Mendocino Syrah project -- but he’s still quietly making some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in all of Oakville -- at a fraction of some of his neighbors’ prices. When his parents Justin and Bonny Meyer sold their half of Silver Oak to partner Ray Duncan, they kept some of the original holdings in Oakville; that land remains some of the best in Napa Valley, and it's what makes this so special. (Finding single-vineyard Oakville Cabernet for less than $100 is nearly impossible; getting it at this price, from one of the most pedigreed sites in all of California ? We're as grateful as you will be.) The 2017 took home the Gold Medal at Sunset's juried Wine Competition, and it's not hard to see why: opulent black fruit, with notes of Asian spices (cardamom and star anise), blackberries, and hints of cedar, smoke, and toast. An under-the-radar Napa stunner.
