This is one of the best - and most poorly kept - secrets in the shop. The region is Puglia, the grape is Nero di Troia (a.k.a. Uva di Troia), and forty years ago it was thought of as merely a rustic blending grape. But a revolution in Pugliese farming (lower yields, better viticulture) and winemaking (namely, managing Troia’s tannins) has brought us A New Favorite Thing. It’s as if my two most beloved Italian grapes, Frappato and Nebbiolo, had a love child. Red cherries, black pepper, and berries found in a brambly thicket. (Vinified in stainless, then aged in bottle for a year before release!)
