Costers del Segre is the way-more-reasonably-priced neighbor of Priorat, a place where $100+ bottles reign. Funny thing is that there’s not a huge difference between the two places. What’s in a name? Tomas Cusine is a meticulous organic producer who packs more into $17 than many Priorat producers do for $50. Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan make for a spiced, currant-like wine reminiscent of old school California Cabernet Sauvignon. There’s tobacco, baker’s chocolate, even fennel dust.
